CITIZEN UNIVERSITY

Launched in 2016, Citizen University (Citizen U) is a leadership development collaborative formed by UCAN and Urbandale Community Education. Formerly known as Leadership Urbandale, Citizen U functions to educate community members to serve in leadership roles while developing a better understanding of volunteer opportunities, local government and civic organizations within the community.

While these information sessions are FREE, please register in advance to allow for appropriate room accommodations.

Child care will not be available.

Room assignments will be e-mailed to the registration list in advance.

 

CITIZEN UNIVERSITY SCHEDULE:

 

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2017                    HISTORY AND TOUR OF URBANDALE

9:00 AM – 12:00 PM at the Olmsted House

Description: The History and City tour session will begin at the Olmsted House with a member of the Historical Society providing participants with an overview of the history of our community followed by a bus tour narrated by the Director of Community Planning and the Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation which will focus on ongoing and future community and parks development. 

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2017                           STATE OF THE SCHOOLS

6:30 PM – 8:00 PM at Urbandale High School

Description:   In this session, Urbandale Superintendent of Schools, Steve Bass, will provide an overview of some of the district and individual school highlights and accomplishments from the past two years. He will share challenges our district faces, as well as the opportunities which lie ahead. There will also be a brief time for the participants to ask questions. All are sure to learn something new about our school district in this informative session. 

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2017                     CITY AND COUNTY GOVERNMENT

6:30 PM – 8:00 PM at Urbandale High School

Description: The City/County Government session will be facilitated by Urbandale Mayor Bob Andeweg and Polk County Supervisor Bob Brownell. Participants will learn about the principal responsibilities of City and County government, how they work together to achieve common goals and have the opportunity to explore an issue impacting both local governments.

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2017                         ETHICAL LEADERSHIP IN ACTION

6:30 PM – 8:00 PM at Urbandale High School

Description: The Ethical Leadership in Action session will explore the concept of integrity, character competencies necessary for excellence, and core leadership strategies to put ethical leadership into action.  Expected outcomes will include strategies for communication, mindset, habits and accountability necessary for ethical leadership in our interactions with others in our everyday lives.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2017                         ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

6:30 PM – 8:00 PM at Urbandale High School

Description: The Economic Development session will be led by Curtis Brown, Director of Economic Development and Katie Geizler, Economic Development Specialist and will focus on the assets and advantages of Urbandale and how they are used for wealth generation, understanding how Urbandale and other metro communities cooperate and contribute to the development of the greater metropolitan and understanding the people involved in the economic development process and the tools they use. Participants will have an opportunity to pose questions, engage in discussion and identify ways to be involved in Urbandale’s growth.
