The Urbandale Community School District owns and controls various names, marks, logos, designs and symbols (hereafter, "marks" or "trademarks") that have become associated with the School District. Examples of such items are the fictional character, the J-Hawk in its many different forms, the Split U, and the terms J-Hawk, J-Hawks, Urbandale J-Hawks, and associated references such as J-Hawk Football.

These marks have been trademarked and copyrighted in compliance with state and/or federal regulations. These items may not be used or recreated without the written permission of the Urbandale Community School District.

By obtaining protection for these materials through copyrights and/or trademarks, the Urbandale Community School District is protecting the integrity of the District’s identifying marks.  In addition, these copyrights and trademarks:
  • Ensure that products bearing the District’s marks are of good quality;
  • Ensure that each licensed use reflects positively on the District.

The purpose of this document is to provide guidance on permissible use, as well as to explain restrictions on the use of the school’s names and marks and to clarify the procedures for obtaining permission for use. Any individual, organization or company wishing to use Urbandale Community School District marks must have written permission to use these items and subject themselves to regulation by the Urbandale Community School District.

 Consistent use of our identity standards will allow Urbandale Community School District to:

  • Create recognition

Use of the Marks

General Information: To maintain the protection for its marks, the District must monitor their use.  Additionally, state and federal regulations--and licenses the District has with third parties--dictate how the marks can and cannot be used.  Therefore, all uses, even those promoting the District, must be cleared by the Community Education Department.

Internal Use: For school or District use such as letterhead, brochures, reports, etc., there is no licensing approval required, except for the verbal permission of the Activities Office. However, the trademarks may not be altered, may not be sold for profit, and must be reproduced using a high quality master digital image. These digital images can be obtained by contacting the Community Education Department at 515-457-6950.

External Use: Schools and departments of the Urbandale Community School District can use trademarks to raise funds for their own purposes or to support charities with the permission of the Activities Director. Items purchased for sale must be acquired from those manufacturers that have the design artwork approved by the Community Education Department (these manufacturers will submit the artwork for you). The manufacturer may be required to pay royalties on the product in such cases. The marks must not be altered.

Teams and Student Groups:  Officially recognized student groups and teams may purchase merchandise displaying name/logo and school trademarks for organization internal use with permission of the Director of Activities and Community Education. Prior to purchase, the organization must submit a Trademark Use Request Form, accompanied by the proposed design, to the Director of Activities and Community Education for approval. School trademarks may not be altered and all merchandise must include name/logo on the product. Student organizations must use those manufacturers that have the design artwork approved by the Community Education Department for merchandise purchased for the internal use. All merchandise purchased for use by organization members only will be exempt from any royalty.

All merchandise sold through or by student organizations bearing Urbandale marks must be purchased from those manufacturers that have the design artwork approved by the Community Education Department. Merchandise created for resale, even as a fundraiser for charity, may require royalties to be paid by the manufacturer to the Community Education Department. Student groups must also obtain permission from the Director of Activities and Community Education for any type of sales.  For further information regarding Urbandale marks, please contact the Community Education Department at 515-457-6950.

Unauthorized Use:  The Urbandale Community School District is committed to protecting Urbandale’s marks and the reputation they represent. No use of the marks is permitted without advance written permission of the Community Education Department.  Information regarding possible trademark infringement should be reported to William R. Watson (william.watson@j-hawks.com) at the Urbandale Community Education Department, (515) 457-6950.

Spelling

The terms “J-Hawk” and “J-Hawks” must always be spelled with the capital “J” and the hyphen, rather than spelling out “Jay” or “Jayhawks.”
